POM (Polyacetal) Rod

Röchling - Polyoxymethylene (POM) property:
POM rod (polyacetal) is a low-friction, dimensionally stable engineering plastic rod that machines cleanly and excels in gears, bushings, sliders, and other precision wear parts.

POM (Polyacetal) Sheet

Röchling - Polyoxymethylene (POM) property:
POM sheet is an engineering thermoplastic with high strength, low friction, and excellent dimensional stability, making it a reliable alternative to light metal parts in various industries.

What is Polyoxymethylene (POM)?

Polyoxymethylene (POM), commercially known as Acetal or Polyacetal, is a high-crystalline engineering thermoplastic renowned for its outstanding mechanical strength, exceptional dimensional stability, extremely low friction coefficient, and superior wear resistance. As the official importer and stockist of Röchling Sustarin® POM materials in the UAE and wider Middle East region, NORDIO PLASTIC offers both homopolymer (POM-H) and copolymer (POM-C) grades directly from Röchling, Germany.

Key Advantages of Polyoxymethylene (POM) Over Other Engineering Plastics

POM is often referred to as “the metal replacement plastic” due to the following unique properties:

  1. Extremely low coefficient of friction (even in dry running conditions)
  2. Excellent abrasion and wear resistance (superior to most PA66 grades)
  3. High tensile strength and stiffness (comparable to aluminum in certain applications)
  4. Outstanding creep resistance and long-term dimensional stability
  5. Very low moisture absorption (<0.2 % for POM-C)
  6. Good chemical resistance to fuels, solvents, and neutral chemicals
  7. Continuous service temperature from –50 °C up to +110 °C (POM-C)
  8. FDA and EU 10/2011 compliant grades available for food and medical applications

POM-H vs POM-C – Which Grade Should You Choose?

Property POM-H (Homopolymer) POM-C (Copolymer) Winner
Mechanical strength & stiffness Higher Slightly lower POM-H
Thermal stability Up to +90 °C Up to +110 °C POM-C
Chemical resistance (alkaline) Lower Significantly higher POM-C
Centerline porosity Possible in thick sections None POM-C
Moisture absorption 0.25 % 0.20 % POM-C
Machinability Excellent Excellent Equal
Price Slightly lower Slightly higher POM-H

Main Applications of Polyoxymethylene in Modern Industry

Thanks to its unique combination of properties, POM is the material of choice in demanding applications such as:

  1. Precision gears, bearings, and bushings
  2. Pump and valve components
  3. Conveyor chain guides and wear strips
  4. Automotive fuel system components and interior clips
  5. Electrical insulators and housings
  6. Medical device components and surgical instruments (FDA grades)
  7. Food processing machine parts (EU 10/2011 & FDA compliant)
  8. Snap-fit fasteners and spring elements
  9. Rollers and cam followers

Frequently Asked Questions about Polyoxymethylene (POM)

Is POM the same as Delrin®?

Delrin® is DuPont’s registered trademark for POM-H. Sustarin® is Röchling’s equivalent and often outperforms Delrin® in dimensional stability and chemical resistance.

Can POM be used in food contact applications?

Yes. Sustarin® C natural and blue grades are fully compliant with FDA 21 CFR 177.2470 and EU 10/2011.
