UHMW 1000

Röchling's UHMW 1000 (Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene) sheets and rods are engineered to deliver outstanding performance in demanding environments. Known for their exceptional wear resistance, low coefficient of friction, and high impact strength, these materials are trusted across various industries for enhancing equipment durability and efficiency.

Key Properties of UHMW 1000:

  1. Superior abrasion resistance ensures long-lasting durability even under continuous sliding contact with rough or abrasive surfaces.
  2. Self-lubricating, low-friction surface reduces wear on moving parts and minimizes the need for additional lubrication.
  3. Excellent impact strength allows the material to absorb shocks without cracking or breaking.
  4. Outstanding chemical resistance protects against acids, bases, and many solvents, making it suitable for harsh industrial environments.
  5. Wide temperature tolerance, functioning reliably between -200°C and +80°C.
  6. FDA compliant grades available, making it safe for use in food processing and pharmaceutical applications.

Common Applications of UHMW 1000:

 1. Bulk Material Handling & Conveyor Systems

  • Liners for chutes, hoppers, silos, and bins: Prevents material buildup and bridging, reducing downtime.
  • Chain guides and wear strips: Reduces friction and wear on moving parts.
  • Skid plates: Protect metal surfaces from abrasion.

2. Food Processing Industry

  • Cutting boards and surfaces: FDA-approved UHMW sheets are hygienic and easy to clean.
  • Guide rails, star wheels, and timing screws: Ideal for bottling and packaging lines due to low friction and noise.

3. Mining and Quarrying

  • Truck bed liners: Prevents sticking of sticky or frozen materials (e.g., coal, limestone).
  • Transfer point wear liners: Reduces wear in areas of high impact and abrasion.

4. Marine and Dock Fenders

  • Fender pads and bumpers: Protects boats and docks from impact, handles exposure to water and UV.

5. Mechanical and Industrial Applications

  • Bushings, rollers, and bearings: Operates without external lubrication.
  • Machine parts: Custom-machined components for wear-heavy environments.

6. Packaging and Bottling Equipment

  • Components like feed screws, wear strips, and guide rails that benefit from low wear and smooth sliding.

Advantages of UHMW 1000:

1. High Impact Strength

  • UHMW 1000 has excellent impact resistance, making it highly durable under heavy mechanical stress.

2. Low Friction

  • It has a very low coefficient of friction, which makes it ideal for applications where smooth sliding and wear resistance are important.

3. Excellent Wear Resistance

  • It resists abrasion and has great longevity in applications involving repeated contact or movement.

4. Chemical Resistance

  • UHMW is resistant to most chemicals, acids, and solvents, which makes it useful in harsh chemical environments.

5. Self-Lubricating

  • Its low friction property often eliminates the need for external lubrication.

6. Good Impact Absorption

  • It can absorb shocks and vibrations, useful for cushioning applications.

7. Non-toxic and FDA Approved

  • Suitable for food handling and medical applications.

Limitations of UHMW 1000:

1. Poor UV Resistance

  • It degrades or discolors when exposed to prolonged ultraviolet light unless specially stabilized.

2. Low Heat Resistance

  • It has a relatively low melting point (~130-136°C) and loses mechanical strength at elevated temperatures.

3. Difficult to Bond or Paint

  • Its chemical inertness makes it challenging to bond with adhesives or coat with paints.

4. High Creep Under Load

  • Under constant stress, it tends to deform over time (creep), which limits its use in structural load-bearing applications.

5. Not Very Rigid

  • It is flexible and can deform under heavy loads unless supported.

6. Limited Solvent Resistance

  • While generally chemical resistant, it can swell or degrade with some organic solvents like chlorinated hydrocarbons.
